The usefulness of a pickup truck

I met another of our neighbors yesterday, but in the most unusual way yet.

I had walked with Morgon a couple blocks to Jerry and Erika’s house drop him off so he could play basketball with Malachi. Erika gave me a plate of ours to take home, and I started back.

As I rounded the corner to our street, I saw a dog walking and sniffing around on my side of the road. She looked to be a pit bull mix, not too big, but I didn’t see an owner anywhere. I crossed to the other side of the road and kept going.

In the commonplace things

Aside

We look for visions from heaven, for earthquakes and thunders of God’s power (the fact that we are dejected proves that we do), and we never dream that all the time God is in the commonplace things and people around us. If we will do the duty that lies nearest, we shall see Him. One of the most amazing revelations of God comes when we learn that it is in the commonplace things that the Deity of Jesus Christ is realized.”

An Eternal reality

Aside

The Body of Christ, the Church, is not just an expression of the life of God, but a preview of eternity. It’s the revealing of the reality of eternity.

I’m not going to be a father to my son in heaven. I’m not. But I will be a part of the family of God there, just as I am here. That family is eternal, and is so much more real than our earthly family.”

On being gathered together “In His Name”

In Matthew 18 there’s this really neat section in verses 15–19 where Jesus is teaching his disciples and teaching about conflict resolution within the Church. It’s a very corporate-minded teaching, and Jesus talks some about the authority and power that the Church has. He says in closing in verse 19:

For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”

I wanted to take some time to talk about this verse in particular, as it’s one of those much-abused verses. I have read about and heard many people claiming this promise, “because we are here together in His name, He is here with us!”

I’ll sum it up in one word…

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”

Yes, our family went to see the Broadway production of Mary Poppins today. It was astounding.

The boys were enthralled. It was the first time Tristan had ever been to a live theater production. He was quite puzzled at first, and asked all sorts of questions about why ‘the screen kept changing’. We figured out that he thought this was a movie theater, and he couldn’t figure out how they were doing this amazingly life-like 3d stuff… once we explained it was real life actors and props, he really got into it.

Call a Meatloaf a Meatloaf

It mystifies me how people take the same traditions and methods of modern Christianity, mix and match them in different ways, and expect to get different results.

I’ve met people who are tired of the traditions of ‘institutionalized’ Christianity. They’re tired of doing the Bible studies, Sunday services, youth groups, Sunday school, etc., but when and if they leave that system, more often than not they end up doing the same types of traditions outside the system. It’s easy to become yet another denomination.
